1. From hooks-in guard, deep grip on collar and grip sleeve. "Old-style" but effective. If he tries to stand, pull him down with the collar so he can't stand properly. Move back and keep pulling him in and down to pull him off balance and into a hooking sweep. Will work with other versions of open guard, esp. your feet on his knees while he is kneeling. Continuing to move back and keep his head down with the collar are sound tactics.
2. If he is on his knees and pulls back. Your R hand is in his collar and L hand on his sleeve. .L knee on the floor, L shin pointing R. Swing R foot back behind; push with R leg and punch forward with your R hand, driving him to his R and off his knees onto his back; try to get to Side control, and avoid the guard - watch out for armbars.
3. Same position, grab his R collar with you R  a little low snd punch it on to his chest, pulling the collar across his throat. Pull his head down (Huen sao) with your L, with your L forearm on the back of his head thread your L hand under your R wrist and pull your L fingers back to choke. His escape is to weave his head to his R, under your L arm. To prevent this, fall to your left, and push your L elbow to your R, thus strengthening the choke.
If manages to weave his head out, his weight is on his R side and you are in perfect position to punch with your R and push him over as in 2 above.
4. You have side-back control on his L side. His elbows are in. drive your L hand in under his L arm and grab his wrist. Move his L hand toward his L knee as you put your weight on his L shoulder and drive it down. This will prevent him from turning to his L toward you and pulling guard. Move to the front and put your knees on either side of his head. Move with small steps to your L until he falls to his right. Sprawl and crush his arm on your wrist; apply the figure 4. After securing the grip, go back to knees either side of his head. move his arm anticlockwise to apply the kimura.
5. Like 4, except you come to your feet as you move around to the front; put your weight on his shoulders with your knees, or by sort of sitting on him. sit down on your left with your R foot next to his head, your L shin in his back or left side and roll him to his R to armbar his L arm..
6. If he rolls forward to undo his L arm step around his head to take kneeride on his L side, keeping hold of his arm.
7. He is turtled, you are right behind him. "Dovetail” him, putting all your weight on his hips. Do not put one of your legs between his, as he can reach through, grab your leg, roll forward and catch you with a kneebar. Slide your L hand over his left thigh and cup his right knee, similar on the R side but blocking his elbow. Move out wide to his right and lift his L leg, rolling him to his right toward you. Once he falls transfer your L hand to grab his L upper arm, elbow low and pressing into his back like Rodin's "The Thinker."  Come to your knees to get side control, crush his arm and get the figure 4. Come up on your R foot with the foot just behind his head then drive the shin over his head to get your knee to the floor and turn to front control, and apply Kimura. Works well against someone who escapes side control to knees, let them go and run around to their back as they come to their knees, get your arms in over their legs and roll them over so they keep moving in the same direction.
It is a good tactic when you have someone's back like that to put your hands in behind their elbows and keep pushing their elbows forward, thus disrupting their position,
John spoke at some length on developing a "game", and associated topics.
A game is essentially your ideal strategy and tactics for winning a match or beating an opponent. Ideally it is fairly simple. john related the example of Geoff Thompson, the famous British martial artist and writer, whose "game" could arguably be boiled down to a single move: right cross. However, a game is not just a small number of techniques; it must be based on the fundamentals of the selected delivery system, and also have a support system.
The fundamentals are the basic techniques and movements of your selected art. In boxing it would be jab, cross, hook, uppercut, overhand, bob, weave, parry, and footwork. In BJJ, it would be something like the 36 techniques you need to demonstrate to be able to grade to blue belt in the Machado system.
These and all the other techniques you learn, along with various tactics, etc. form your support system. Your game may be a small number, or even just one, technique; your support system is necessary for the hopefully relatively infrequent times when you cannot immediately apply your game. For recovering when things go wrong, or the "Plan B" from John's own theory of combinations (on his website, A support system will ideally be both broad and deep (more on this below) 
In BJJ, for a decent game at a minimum you need a guard pass, sweep, and finish.
To select techniques for your game, selection guidelines are:
1. It should be somewhat out of the mainstream, so that surprise and unfamiliarity will work for you.
2. At the same time, it should be employable in situations that arise fairly often.
3. The first step must be doable. The "Twister", a submission which requires eight moves to implement, and with which Eddie Bravo (and maybe others) have won black belt level competition with, illustrates that such complex stepwise moves are achievable - but you must be able to do the first step.
Breadth and Depth
In BJJ, breadth of a person's game indicates their ability to flow between techniques and switch tactics on the fly. When you can't make one thing work, move on to something else. Depth refers to the ability to persist with a technique, progressively removing obstacles and solving problems until reaching your goal, the successful implementation of the technique.
John calls the two mindsets "The Frog" (breadth, jumping and looking everywhere) and "The Tyrannosaur" (depth, tunnel vision, complete concentration on a single goal).
An equal balance of breadth and depth is desirable; most people however have a natural inclination toward one mindset or the other, and one role of the coach is to develop that balance in each student.
Reverse Engineering
John also discussed one of his methods of developing techniques, which he refers to as "reverse engineering" - to find out how to achieve a complex position, perhaps with multiple complex controls, start at the end position and work backwards in a stepwise fashion, until you end up at a common position where you are comfortable. Run the steps in the forward order, and you have your methodology for applying the technique.

  1. You are in switchbase side control on his right. With your right hand, pass the left skirt of your gi over his neck, reach under his head with your left hand and take the gi skirt from you right Turn to your right, put your feet on the floor and your head near his right hip, and walk your feet around his head until you are on his left side in side control – cross face him with your right hand to complete the choke. 
  2. If he stops you walking around his head by blocking with his right arm, roll forward, using the hold with your left hand on your gi to take him with you. If he doesn’t tap out first, you should both end up on your knees. Grab his far collar or elsewhere close by on his gi  with your right hand and complete the choke.
  3. You are trying to legbar his left leg, he is on his back and your are sitting to his left with his left leg between yours. He triangles his right knee over his left ankle to block the legbar. Take your left hand over his right shin, grab his left foot from underneath. Sit back onto your right side so your right knee is on the floor, blocking him from coming toward you, His right foot ends up in your armpit, his left in the crook of your elbow. Join your hands and crank on his left foot.
  4.  You are on your knees, he has attempted an omoplata on your right arm with his right knee triangling his left foot. Grab the inside of your right thigh to prevent him cranking your arm and post up with your left foot. Reach around with your left hand to grab his belt on his right side, trapping his right shin against your chest. You can press in from here. If he arches his hips off the floor to relieve the pressure, roll him over his right shoulder onto his stomach, join your hands together around his left leg and crush.
  5. He has half guard on your right leg, with the “lockdown” – his left leg over your leg, his right knee triangled over his left foot, his right foot locked under your ankle. Put both hands on his chest and post on your left foot. Stand up on your right leg, his legs will now be locked. Shuffle right foot forward, left backward until they are parallel and then push down on both knees with each hand.
  6. He is kneeling, your feet on his hips in open guard. Your right hand grabs his right sleeve, your left hand his left sleeve, his right (?) arm on top. Turn on your left side, open his arms up and put your right hook under his right armpit. Turn back so you are flat, recross his arms and put your left hook inside his right leg. Sweep him to your right using your left hook – legbar opportunity from here.
  7. Same as before, but place your right hook under his LEFT armpit. Hook the outside or his left knee with your left foot and spin/roll onto your shoulders, in a type of reverse guard. Spin all the way around on your shoulders until you get your left leg over his head/neck to apply the triangle.
  8. Similar to before, but place your right foot under his right armpit in sidekick position. Push away and spin to reverse spider guard. From her you can put a foot on either side of his body and spin to the triangle on either side, similar to previous technique.
  9. Reverse spider guard – spin over your left shoulder back toward the normal guard. Put your right hook inside his left leg, and over his right arm that you are gripping with your right hand. Insert your left hook inside his right knee,, sit up and grab his belt with your left hand. Sweep to your left with your right hook, driving your left leg under for extra leverage.
  10. Heel hook from guard attempt on his left leg, he tries to step out facing away from you, grab his heel. Your right leg is already over his, triangle it off with your left leg going out to your left side, move forward, grab his belt or waist and push him on his face, encircling his waist with your arms, leaning on him and calf crushing him with bodyweight.
  11. Triangle drill, no hands – he is kneeling in your guard, elbow on your stomach. 1 – close high guard. 2. –pull him in and grip him tightly with your legs 3- foot on hip, angle out 4 –cut across the neck 5- close the triangle.

When he grabs your pants in your open guard. 
Same side arm drag - attack the lower leg.
Opposite side arm drag 
From hooks in,  move your leg to create the gap for the arm drag 
Rigan’s sweep - grab belt/gi to trap his R arm with your left, Use your knee to act like the same side arm drag, to remove the R arm, L leg through his, lock it to the right leg to put him in half guard. Hip out to the left, fall back and use the knee to sweep him to your left. 
Cross face

You have side control on his R, locking his left arm between you, your L arm under his head. 
Get there from front control. Work both your elbows to the floor between each of his upper arms and chest. Turn anticlockwise to side control on his R, using your left elbow to drag his left arm up and over his body, then when you have moved far enough, slide your left forearm under his head to get the crossface. 
Or from switchbase, switched toward his feet rather than his head. On his right side, use your L elbow, and R hip and knee, on either side of his body, to control him. Put your head on his left thigh to avoid being kneed. If he lifts his left elbow -you should feel it - move to side control same way as before.  
If he lifts his R elbow, use your left hip to drive it up toward his head and across his body, “backing up the truck”. when you get your hip over his head, “reach for the gun”. in an imaginary holster on your R hip with your R hand, taking your R forearm under the L side of his head, moving to side control on his L with his R arm trapped in a crossface between you. Let the pressure off a bit in the final stage to avoid dragging his R arm too far down his body. 
His Left arm trapped on his R in crossface, slide your R knee over. Come up on left foot and rotate hips and "shin slap" with R shin to avoid half guard. Get mount. Leave your L arm under his head, keeping the crossface.  Grab your R bicep with your L hand.  Take your R forearm across under and behind your L forearm so your arms are crossed under his head. Now you can disengage your L arm and use it to help get the armwrap with your R hand on his L. Turn and lift him to sidemount – he is on his R side. 
Get “dog paddle” grip with both hands - disengage R and bring it over his head, place your R fist on the left side of your L fist, so that the fists touch and your R fist blocks the side of the left fist so he cannot pull his arm out. Use the R to post on to assist in bringing the R leg over his head - sit back to armbar. 
Side mount, armwrap on his L arm. Get fig 4 grip your R arm with L. Dismount to side control. step with R foot in front of his head. put pressure  on the back of his head with your R bicep so he wants to get it out, release his head and drop your R knee to the floor and get the fig 4. You should just about be sitting on his head. Try to trap his R arm with your R shin if you can. 
Sidemount/armwrap on his L arm. Get dog paddle grip with both hands on his L arm. Move R shin parallel to his body. Fall straight back rolling over your R shin, perpendicular to his body, and roll him into hooks-in back control.. Grab his left collar with your R hand as deep as possible - you can release his L arm to allow him to grab his collar, which opens it up more, then you can get tighter and grab his arm again. Remove your R hook and allow him to escape to his R. If he doesn't move use your hook to roll him on his face. You to his R. Put your weight on his head, and drive the side of your wrist up into his throat with your R as you  hold his arm with your L - for clock choke - move your legs and body around if necessary. 
Do not wait for verification (anticipate) 
Where is your weight? On top 
On bottom, use what you can, not what you have 
Keep moving when rolling so the brain has to work fast 
You attempt forearm choke on his right side. He counters by pushing on your L elbow with his R hand. Grab his bicep with your R hand and pull his arm underneath your body. Switch base slightly and slide your L knee under his right shoulder. Push your right hand through and bring it back, trapping his right wrist under your R armpit with your R elbow. Cup his bicep with your R hand. Put your R knee on top of his shoulder and apply an armbar, pushing up on his elbow with your R hand, holding his wrist with your armpit and his shoulder between your knees. 
From headlock on his L side, you have his L arm and attempt the figure 4 with legs. He counters by pronating  his L arm under your R leg. Place your L elbow back next to his hip, keep him pinned, and step over his head with your R leg, sliding the R calf under his head and locking the R foot behind the L knee for a reverse triangle. 
You have headlock control on his L. He has his arms wrapped and scoots his feet toward you for bridge and roll. If his L knee is up, overhook it with your R arm for the spinal crank. If it is on the floor hook it with your R leg and pass it to your R hand; chase his knee and apply a legbar on his L leg. 
Good attacks: 
Lock off part of his defence 
Start in one position and finish in another.

He stands in your closed guard. Keep your guard closed and underhook his left leg with your right arm, thus stopping him from picking you up and slamming - an IA or "immediate action" in SOG parlance. Open legs, turn on your shoulders to face left, push off his body with your right leg and roll backwards over your right shoulder to knees, still holding the leg. Drive your right armpit into his left knee, pushing his knee toward your right foot, like a low single, Spin on your knees to face him and begin to set up your pass.
If he turns clockwise and braces with his left leg to prevent the takedown, post on your L arm and stand up, lifting his leg. Under hook his leg with your L arm, then transfer your right overhook to an underhook so you have a two on one on his right leg. Now either lift his right leg with your arms and kick out his left, or step your right foot in front of his right foot and wizzer (rotational force) him down so he lands on his side.
If you keep hold of his lower leg with your left arm, you can apply a figure 4 footlock by grabbing the toes (end of the lever) with the right hand  and then grabbing your right wrist with your left hand. CAREFUL. The  same lock can work from other positions, e.g. after an omoplata attempt, his foot is right there.
If, after you roll out of the guard to knees, he does what he should do and put his weight on his left leg and presses his knee down on you while at the same time pushing your head down with his left hand so you can't lift it to stand, post with your left hand, stand up on your left foot and run like a sprinter coming out of the blocks, pulling his leg directly forward with your R hand. His toes point the direction to move   to take him down.
We reviewed the stepover legbar from open guard.
Once again, he stands up in your open guard, you underhook his left leg with your right arm and spin to face lR. Drop and let your right knee go between his legs, with your right foot hooking his hip (instep along his left underwear line). Now shoot up high on your right shoulder and wrap your left leg around his left side and back into the legbar position. While the legbar could be applied right here, force him down via pressure on his knee, so you fall on your right side. Come up on your right elbow, giving you room to get your right foot out of his groin and into the standard kneebar position. Good for a person who stands up in your closed guard legs wide.
"Chase the knee" in legbars.
If he stands up legs close together, open your legs, control his sleeves and drop your hips to the floor, re-closing your legs tight around his knees. Use legs and hands to pull him over head, releasing his sleeves so he can post, and so you can hug his thighs to you  - you MUST hug his thighs, otherwise he will get mount. Now, bridge and roll him to end up mounted on his legs.. If he manages to post out wide to stop your bridge and roll, just reverse direction, come out from under and take the back. The knee-pinch sweep.
Passing exercise - his feet on the floor, he is on his back, you kneeling with both hands inside his feet. Posting on your right hand, push his right knee to the floor, jump your feet around to the left, up on your toes so all your weight is on his knee. Don't grab his pants, this can be used against you. do both sides, then have partner tap a knee at random to pick which side for you to go toward.
From this initial move, pin his right knee with your left hand, jumping to your left - jump both feet in so your left knee is above his right thigh, and your right shin is over his right shin. Do not try to crush his shin as this pressure can be used against you. Underhook his left leg with your R arm and control his hip with the left side of your head and shoulder (facing away to avoid punches) - shoulder control. Your left hand presses against his right thigh. Now switch base, left knee coming under and pushing his right thigh away, then back, driving your right knee to his right hip. Do not move you head or right arm from his left hip. Now move on up his upper body to consolidate side control.
If he posts against your left hip with his right hand. flip your body upside down toward him (right foot comes over left), this putting pressure on his right hand and steamrollering the post. Keep head on left hip and your right underhook on his left leg - do not move them from here. Now take your left foot to your right foot and turn back, driving your right knee into his right hip.
If he manages to get on his right side and commits all his defenses against you that way, take your right  underhook out, press with the right palm on his left knee and slide over to his left side, possibly using your right shin on his left. your left shoulder should retain pressure on his hip, no space as you transfer. Best time to transfer is JUST before the ordinary pass would succeed, so all his defenses are committed to that side, giving your switch the best possible chance of success.
